Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), the U.S Speaker of the House said CBS today that, progress was being made on COVID 19 relief legislation to respond to the economic fallout from a pandemic that has killed more than 214,000 Americans and millions lost their jobs.
CBS’s Margaret Brennan asked Pelosi if President Trump’s tweet on Friday that Americans “need stimulus” means lawmakers and administration officials have come to an agreement.
Pelosi responded on “Face the Nation:
“No, it means that we want to see that they will agree on what we need to do to crush the virus so we can open the economy and open our schools safely,”
Pressed on whether lawmakers are any closer, Pelosi said “we’re making progress.”
Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin talked every day last week and met in person on Wednesday in an effort to negotiate a new bipartisan aid package.
Last Thursday, House Democrats approved a $2.2 trillion COVID 19 relief package. All Republican voted against the bill, saying the spending levels were too high. The Bill was also opposed by Senate Republicans and the White House.
