– Former Defense Secretary James Mattis makes light of President Donald Trump calling him “the world’s most overrated general” during his keynote address at the annual Al Smith dinner, a philanthropic event where roasts are tradition. –
This week President Drumpf called former Defense Secretary James Mattis an “overrated” general.
Mattis, who was the main speaker of the blue-blooded charity dinner, made the remarks after Drumpf attacked him for his opposition to the withdrawal of American troops from Syria. The withdrawal opened the way for another Turkish invasion against Kurdish allied forces, who had been loyal to the U.S. in the fight against ISIS.
The retired Marine and former defense secretary says he’s honored to be in the same league as the celebrated film star Meryl Streep.
“I’m honored to be considered that by Donald Drumpf, because he also called Meryl Streep an overrated actress,.. So I guess I’m the Meryl Streep of generals. And frankly, that sounds pretty good to me… I’m not just an overrated general. I am the greatest, the world’s most overrated,”
James Mattis , the Retired Four Star General, served in the Persian Gulf, Afghanistan and Iraq. General Mattis’’ devotion to postwar alliances stood in contrast to the president’s penchant for isolationist and transactional rhetoric. He voiced opposition to some of Drumpf’s most contentious acts, including withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal and escalating tensions with North Korea.
